Šárovo kolo will be completely changed
It has taken many months but
the wait has been worth it. At the end of 2017, another construction for tens
of millions of crowns was launched in Radotín with the handover of the building
site. All the building work will then take place in the spring of 2018. As well
as improving people’s comfort, it will also provide better flood protection.
The drought for the past four years has been deceiving people in Central
Europe and has made them complacent. In recent years the Berounka has been more
like a large stream than a major Czech river. But as we know from 2002 and
2013, all it takes is a few weeks of heavy rain and then we are overwhelmed
with problems. The stream becomes a torrent that destroys everything within
reach...
One of the most affected areas in Radotín during both those floods was
Šárovo kolo. Whilst elsewhere the problem is with buildings being flooded, here
the force of the water mass in the right-handed river bend is most destructive
- until now only an old clay embankment with unsecured approaches on to
properties stood in its way. But this will change radically in the months to
come.
“After long negotiations with representatives of Prague City we have
managed to resolve the very complicated means of financing,” Mayor Mgr. Karel
Hanzlík explains the delay in starting the project. “The construction involves
a new sewerage system, the renewal of the water pipeline, the widening of the
road, a brand new footpath and especially flood protection measures.” The last item
mentioned is key because solving what are known as the dynamic effects of flooding
(basically mitigating the onslaught and the consequences of the flood) was the
primary impetus. All the other parts were then wrapped around it in an effort
to build a single structure and to do it all at once.

“The last transfer of funds for the construction amounting to 49 million
CZK, excluding VAT, was approved by Prague City Council last month, in
November,” adds the mayor of Radotín. At the same time, on the basis of a
combined investment by the city district and Pražská vodohospodářská společnost
a.s. there was a tender for the contractor for the entire construction, which
was won by Čermák a Hrachovec a.s.
Other flood prevention measures are being prepared by Prague 16 City
District for the Rymáně area, but first of all the purchase of land for the
planned flood embankment needs to be resolved. The second round of negotiations
with their owners continues.
